The Ranch Hand Ride

This Ranch Hand Ride is the perfect ride to get the full Colorado horseback riding experience. We start on an old Jeep road once used to access Ouray's historic mining areas. From there we take trails in to the Uncompahgre Wilderness that are accessed by foot or horseback only. Right away we start gaining elevation via steep switchbacks on the Baldy Trail. On top of Baldy you are surrounded by mountain peaks. To the East Mt. Sneffels and to the West Chimney Peak and Court House Mountain, the setting of John Wayne's True Grit. We stop for a quick break to stretch and check tack. Then we make a loop around to the Storm Gulch Trail and descend a set switchbacks ending up in the creek bottom for the horses to get a well deserved drink. Four hours in the saddle can be quite intimating and will surely leave you a bit sore, but the experience is well worth it.
